Getting Started

How to set up Interview AI

1. Download and install the app from the Download page
2. On first launch, the onboarding wizard will appear
3. Get a free API key from OpenRouter or Groq and paste it in
4. Grant necessary permissions for microphone and audio
5. The floating toolbar will appear — you're ready to go

Your first interview session

To start your first interview: Click "Start Session" on the main dashboard, select your interview type (Technical, Behavioral, or General), choose the difficulty level, and begin speaking. Interview AI will listen to questions and provide real-time assistance.

System requirements

Minimum: Windows 10/11, macOS 10.15+, or Linux with modern kernel, 4GB RAM, microphone, and internet connection. Recommended: 8GB RAM, dedicated microphone, and stable broadband connection for best performance.

Audio & Recognition

Setting up audio devices

Go to Settings → Audio, select your preferred microphone and speaker devices. Test audio levels using the built-in test feature. We recommend using a dedicated microphone or headset for best results.

Voice recognition issues

If Interview AI isn't recognizing your voice: Check microphone permissions in your system settings, ensure your microphone is selected in the app, speak clearly at a moderate pace, reduce background noise, and verify your internet connection is stable.

Improving audio quality

Use a quality microphone or headset, position the mic 6-8 inches from your mouth, find a quiet environment, adjust input volume to 70-80%, and enable noise cancellation if available on your device.

API Keys & Setup

Which API key do I need?

Interview AI is 100% free — you only need an API key from an AI provider of your choice. We recommend OpenRouter (one key for 200+ models) or Groq (free tier, ultra-fast). You can also use OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google Gemini, or xAI directly.

Free API key options

Groq — completely free tier, very fast. Get your key at console.groq.com/keys
OpenRouter — free credits on sign-up, access to all models. Get your key at openrouter.ai/keys
Google Gemini — free tier available at Google AI Studio

How to add or change your API key

Open the app → click the ⚙ Settings button (or press Ctrl+,) → paste your API key → click Save. The backend restarts automatically with your new key.

Supported AI providers

OpenRouter, OpenAI (GPT-4o, GPT-4o-mini), Anthropic (Claude), Groq (Llama, Mixtral), Google Gemini, xAI (Grok), and any OpenAI-compatible API. Switch providers any time in Settings.

Connection problems

If you're experiencing connection issues: Verify internet connectivity, check firewall settings aren't blocking the app, restart your router, disable VPN temporarily, and ensure you're not behind a corporate proxy.
